Copper scrap sorting Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as promising materials for the selective conversion of CO2 to value-added chemicals, particularly because of their high surface area, tunable pore sizes, and chemical functionality. In recent years, researchers have focused their attention on developing MOFs with cooperative copper centres, which can exhibit high activity and selectivity towards the electrochemical reduction of CO2 to ethanol. In a recent study, a team of researchers reported the successful synthesis of a MOF with cooperative copper centres for the selective conversion of CO2 to ethanol. The MOF, named MOF-520, was designed with ligands that provided multiple anchoring sites for copper ions, which allowed for the formation of highly reactive copper centres within the MOF structure. The researchers found that the cooperative copper centres in MOF-520 were able to selectively reduce CO2 to ethanol with high efficiency. They attributed this high selectivity to the presence of multiple copper centres within the MOF, which promoted the formation of ethanol through a stepwise reaction pathway. The researchers also investigated the effect of different reaction conditions on the activity and selectivity of MOF-520. They found that higher CO2 pressure and a basic electrolyte solution were beneficial for improving the efficiency of the CO2 reduction reaction and enhancing the stability of the cooperative copper centres within the MOF structure. This study provides valuable insights into the design and synthesis of MOFs for selective CO2 conversion, particularly with regards to the use of cooperative metal centres.
